This year’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is celebrated under the theme UNiTE! Activism to End Violence against Women and Girls. We invited  Rumbidzayi Makoni, who oversees the Women’s Rights and Economic Justice portfolio at ActionAid Zimbabwe to share her recommendations in honour of the day, which also marks the launch of the UNiTE campaign.

Rumbidzayi is a Zimbabwean feminist, entrepreneur, and development practitioner with a passion for supporting young people to realise their full potential and supporting economic emancipation of women.

Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds

By Adrienne Maree Brown

I love this book because it takes a feminist approach to organising and building movements which is what I think is necessary for the elimination of violence against women and girls (VAWG).

Some men: Feminist Allies and Movements to End Violence Against women

By Michael Messner, Max Greenburg and Tal Peretz

To me, this is a reminder that not all men are the enemy. We are fighting against violence and not the men.

Safety with dignity: A women-led community-based protection approach in humanitarian and protracted crises

By ActionAid

This is a practical toolkit on how ActionAid promotes women-led community-based protection in humanitarian settings. I love it because it shows how women can take back their power.

The Care Contradiction: the IMF, Gender and Austerity

By ActionAid

Many a time we think that VAWG is only inflicted at a personal level, but this publication shines light on the structural and systemic violence against women and calls upon changes at that level.

Assume Nothing: A Story of Intimate Violence

By Tanya Selvaratnam

In this book, the author recounts her abusive relationship with a former boyfriend. Issues of intimate partner violence are real and there is a need to shine light on them so that if anyone is experiencing it, they can find the strength to leave and seek help.
