Mireille Tushiminina shares her top recommendations to commemorate International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation

We invited Mireille Tushiminina to share her top recommendations in honour of this year’s  International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, observed under the theme “Partnership with Men and Boys to Transform Social and Gender Norms to End Female Genital Mutilation.”

Mireille is the Global Coordinator of the UNFPA-UNICEF Trust Fund/joint programme to Eliminate FGM. Previously, she worked as the Executive Director of the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa where she focused extensively on monitoring and reporting on various gross human rights violations. Mireille has more than 19 years of international and national experience in human capacity building through sustainable community-based ventures, socio-economic development and strategic planning and program design in the non-profit sector. She is a Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) award recipient and was named the face of African Solidarity by the African Union.

2020 Annual Report on FGM - Gender-Equitable Masculinities in Eliminating Female Genital Mutilation

The Technical Brief and Compendium present promising strategies, tested approaches and practical examples of social norm change. This includes a programme design framework that is relevant for different aspects of sexual and reproductive health and rights in various contexts. The publications build on previous work by UN agencies, civil society, academia and others.

International Men & Gender Equality Survey (IMAGES)

At the 15-year anniversary of IMAGES (International Men and Gender Equality Survey), UNFPA and Equimundo published the largest ever global study on men, masculinities, and gender equality.

IMAGES focuses on crucial gender equality issues, such as gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive health and rights, reproductive labor and participation in caregiving, and fatherhood and has used this evidence to drive and inform government policy at a local and global levels. Equimundo (formerly Promundo) and ICRW developed the IMAGES surveys, which have been implemented extensively with partners, including UNFPA, to conduct in depth research, with the participation of over 67,000 men and women across 32 countries.
