World Malaria Day 2022

We asked Public Health Officer Constance Mandengenda to share her top five publications to celebrate this year’s World Malaria Day under the theme Harness innovation to reduce the malaria disease burden and save lives.
Constance has four years’ experience in malaria control and elimination at district and provincial level with the Ministry of Health and Child Care in Zimbabwe. She has actively spearheaded and participated in malaria control, risk communication and community engagement activities, outbreak response and malaria elimination activities. Constance completed the “MalariaX: Defeating Malaria from the Genes to The Globe,” course offered by Harvard University and has coordinated the documentation of Malaria Community Action Cycle for health, a strong and sustainable community engagement initiative for malaria prevention and control.

Global Technical Strategy for Malaria 2016-2030

This strategic document by the W.H.O provides comprehensive and holistic guidelines for the achievement of malaria elimination in malaria burdened countries globally, as well as prevention of re-emergence of malaria in malaria free countries. The document emphasizes the importance of adopting context specific strategies to ensure reduced malaria morbidity and mortality.

From 30 million to zero malaria cases in China: lessons learnt for China-Africa collaboration in malaria elimination. Journal of Infectious Diseases of poverty.

The article provides a list of strategies that China implemented to be able to reach zero malaria transmission. The strategies include application of innovative genetics based approaches and tools to characterize malaria parasite populations, surveillance of markers related to drug resistance, categorization of cases as indigenous or imported and objective identification of possible sources of infection. The report proposes adoption of similar approaches by malaria endemic countries to reduce their malaria burden, towards global malaria elimination.

Zeroing in on Malaria Elimination: Final Report of the E-2020 Initiative

The document emphasizes that Malaria control should not be a campaign but rather a policy and a long-term programme which cannot be accomplished or maintained spasmodic effort. It requires the adoption of a practicable programme, the reasonable continuity of which will be sustainable over years. The document shares what 20 countries in the elimination initiative have done on their road to elimination, actions which can be adopted in other malaria burdened regions.
